Yesterday, May 2nd, we all enjoyed a very interesting talk, given by Chingmai, on the influence of Taoism on Chinese Art – well prepared and well delivered; thank you Chingmai.
 
In addition, we had the pleasure of meeting Aruna, the new owner of CultureClub. I’m sure that she, as was Lennon, will be very supportive of our effort to broaden the use of Spanish in Hong Kong. We look forward to seeing her again at our next Get Together at CultureClub (15, Elgin Street, Soho District – map attached) on Wednesday, May the 23rd (from 7 p.m. onwards). Bruno, from Chile, has kindly volunteered to gave a talk on Tibet that evening. He says he’s got some wonderful photos and he is an entertaining speaker – I’m sure it’s going to be great, so please make a note in your diary to attend on that evening.
 
Our sincere thanks go to Lennon, for all the support he has given us over the years. We gave him a Spanish course as a present, so it is hoped we will see him at future gatherings on our side of the bar!

Dear Member of the Society,
 
Many thanks to Ronaldo, for hosting the Get Together No. 103, and to Peter, who apparently gave a most enjoyable and well-received talk on Peru. I thought of you all whilst in KL.
 
For our next Get Together, on May 2, Mariana Diaz and Ching Mai, have offered to give a talk, in Spanish ,on “The Influence of Taoism in Chinese Culture”. It’s a challenging topic, so please give them your support.
 
In addition, it will be one of the last opportunities to see Lennon before he gives up his ownership of CultureClub. Let’s show him in what high esteem we hold him! I think the new owner might be there to meet us!
 
 By now you should all know the location – 15 Elgin Street, Soho District – but, just in case, a map is attached. Please remember that everyone with an interest in communicating in Spanish is welcome. There is always a friendly atmosphere and we always have attending native Spanish speakers who invariably give us great support.
 
The evening on May 2 will start at 7 p.m and there will be drinks available at Happy Hour prices (after the first) as well as free snacks. There is no need to reserve or pay any cover charge – just turn up on the night wanting to have a good time and wanting to express yourself in Spanish, at whatever level.

Yesterday, March 21, nearly 40 of us were treated to a well prepared and interesting talk on “Cliches”, given by Christina, from Spain. She made us question some of the assumptions we might hold about Spaniards, albeit in a very entertaining manner.

The next meeting at CultureClub, 15, Elgin Street, Soho District, will take place on Wednesday, April 11, starting at 7 p.m.. Peter has kindly volunteered to give a talk on Peru. Please give him your backing.

Everyone with an interest in communicating in Spanish, at whatever level, is welcome to come along and enjoy the friendly and encouraging atmosphere. Many native speakers generally attend, so it is a wonderful opportunity to improve your Spanish.

Hope you can make it – no registration; no cover charge; drinks at Happy Hour prices (after the first); free snacks; CultureClub solely available to us! All that is asked of you is that you buy at least one drink. Lennon, the owner of CultureClub, has been wonderfully supportive over the years. ]]> Thank you so much to Jeremy, who gave a lively talk on Chile, ably backed by Bruno, who was in the audience and comes from that country. Between them they imparted a lot of interesting information. There were about 50 people and everyone appeared to enjoy themselves.
 
Our next talk, on the 21st, is likely to be as interesting. Cristine and Irene, both from Spain, are to give a talk under the intriguing title of “Clichés” – definitely a first for us. I can’t wait for that one (is that a cliché?).

]]> What a wonderful time we had last night. At least 80 people came to celebrate our 100th gathering, many of whom gave a short, but entertaining, speech. Thank you to all those who braved standing up before so many people and speaking in Spanish for between one and two minutes. It was such fun that we will do it again some time – maybe at Get Together 200!
 
Our next social gathering, with Spanish being the unifying element, will be on Wednesday, February 29th (another special day!). Jeremy Wong, who is currently in South America doing some travelling, has written to me promising to talk about Chile and how to handle a travelling companion for 2 weeks (intriguing!).
 
As most of you know we meet in CultureClub (www.cultureclub.com.hk), 15, Elgin Street, Soho District, from 7 p.m. onwards. Lennon opens his welcoming establishment only for us on that evening, as well as supplies us with free snacks and drinks at Happy Hour prices (after the first). There is no need to register – just turn up with the intention of communicating and socializing in Spanish. It’s a great way to practise your Spanish and you’ll meet many friendly and supportive people.

]]> Well, we’ve made it – no 100! Our next Get Together will be the hundredth gathering since we started in November 2005! Thank you to all those who have helped us reach this magical figure. Thank you to all those who have given talks, including of course Veronica, who gave such an enjoyable talk yesterday evening; thank you to all the people who have supported us by their attendance, good humour and enthusiastic participation, including the 40 who made yesterday evening such an enjoyable time; and thank you to Lennon, the owner of CultureClub – we have been very fortunate in having such a supportive owner giving us sole use of his establishment, free snacks, drinks at Happy Hour prices (after the first) and being so important in making CultureClub a place to relax, enjoy oneself and also converse in Spanish.
 
It is hoped you can come along to CultureClub, 15, Elgin Street, Soho District on February 8 to celebrate. We won’t have a talk, but we hope to have some reminders of the sessions, plus an extra surprise which should produce a lot of Spanish.
 
Lennon has promised to sell us HAPPY HOUR PRICE DRINKS all night! We’ll start at 7 and very much hope to see you there in order to enjoy yourself socially, as well as practise your Spanish. There were many native speakers at gathering No. 99 – long may that continue!

]]> Yesterday, December 7, over 40 of us were lucky enough to hear and comment on a marvellous talk, given by Javier Sanz, on “Bullfighting”. This controversial topic was treated in a very fair way, with both for and against arguments considered. What is more, the Spanish delivery was of an exceptionally high standard – thank you Javier.
 
For our next Get Together, on December the 28th, starting at 7 p.m.,  there is, so far, no volunteer to give a talk. There is one for the January meeting, but not for this one, so if you are interested please get back to me. Given the proximity to Christmas, I’m sure most people won’t mind if it turns out to be just a social gathering. Please, if you are in town, come along – the more the merrier. No need to register or pay any entrance fee -, although everyone is expected to buy at least one drink. Drinks are available at Happy Hour prices, after the first, and free snacks will be available, courtesy of Lennon, the supportive owner of CultureClub.
