What a wonderful time we had last night. At least 80 people came to celebrate our 100th gathering, many of whom gave a short, but entertaining, speech. Thank you to all those who braved standing up before so many people and speaking in Spanish for between one and two minutes. It was such fun that we will do it again some time – maybe at Get Together 200!

Our next social gathering, with Spanish being the unifying element, will be on Wednesday, February 29th (another special day!). Jeremy Wong, who is currently in South America doing some travelling, has written to me promising to talk about Chile and how to handle a travelling companion for 2 weeks (intriguing!).

As most of you know we meet in CultureClub (www.cultureclub.com.hk), 15, Elgin Street, Soho District, from 7 p.m. onwards. Lennon opens his welcoming establishment only for us on that evening, as well as supplies us with free snacks and drinks at Happy Hour prices (after the first). There is no need to register – just turn up with the intention of communicating and socializing in Spanish. It’s a great way to practise your Spanish and you’ll meet many friendly and supportive people.

Well, we’ve made it – no 100! Our next Get Together will be the hundredth gathering since we started in November 2005! Thank you to all those who have helped us reach this magical figure. Thank you to all those who have given talks, including of course Veronica, who gave such an enjoyable talk yesterday evening; thank you to all the people who have supported us by their attendance, good humour and enthusiastic participation, including the 40 who made yesterday evening such an enjoyable time; and thank you to Lennon, the owner of CultureClub – we have been very fortunate in having such a supportive owner giving us sole use of his establishment, free snacks, drinks at Happy Hour prices (after the first) and being so important in making CultureClub a place to relax, enjoy oneself and also converse in Spanish.

It is hoped you can come along to CultureClub, 15, Elgin Street, Soho District on February 8 to celebrate. We won’t have a talk, but we hope to have some reminders of the sessions, plus an extra surprise which should produce a lot of Spanish.

Lennon has promised to sell us HAPPY HOUR PRICE DRINKS all night! We’ll start at 7 and very much hope to see you there in order to enjoy yourself socially, as well as practise your Spanish. There were many native speakers at gathering No. 99 – long may that continue!

About 30 people attended yesterday’s gathering. Considering that many of our regulars were out of Hong Kong on vacation this was a very pleasing number – thank you. Younes gave a clear and interesting talk on Andalucía. He said he would send me a transcript, so that if anybody would like a copy I’ll forward it to them – just let me know.

Our 99th Get Together will be held on January 18th. I hope you can make it. Veronica has kindly volunteered to give a talk related to hiking in Hong Kong. Please give her your support. She has already given two well attended talks.

Thanks to Lennon, the owner of CultureClub (www.cultureclub.com.hk), for the tasty snacks and warm hospitality.

Yesterday, December 7, over 40 of us were lucky enough to hear and comment on a marvellous talk, given by Javier Sanz, on “Bullfighting”. This controversial topic was treated in a very fair way, with both for and against arguments considered. What is more, the Spanish delivery was of an exceptionally high standard – thank you Javier.

For our next Get Together, on December the 28th, starting at 7 p.m., there is, so far, no volunteer to give a talk. There is one for the January meeting, but not for this one, so if you are interested please get back to me. Given the proximity to Christmas, I’m sure most people won’t mind if it turns out to be just a social gathering. Please, if you are in town, come along – the more the merrier. No need to register or pay any entrance fee -, although everyone is expected to buy at least one drink. Drinks are available at Happy Hour prices, after the first, and free snacks will be available, courtesy of Lennon, the supportive owner of CultureClub.

It was nice to see some new members of the Society, as well as new friends from Chile, Venezuela, Colombia, Morocco, France and the U.S., turn up at yesterday’s gathering. Altogether we had about 40 people and I’m sure they enjoyed the exceptionally well delivered talk given by Rudy on “Latinos en Nueva York”. Many thanks go to him and it is hoped he can give another talk sometime in the future. Of course, our thanks also go to Lennon, the owner of CultureClub (www.cultureclub.com.hk), who, as always, offered us splendid hospitality.

Our next talk, on December 7, should be very interesting. Javier Sanz will talk about bull-fighting. This is a controversial topic and I hope we will have some stimulating discussion after we hear Javier’s point of view. Thank you, Javier, for offering to talk about this topic.

Remember anybody with an interest in communicating in Spanish is welcome to come along to our Get Togethers. It’s wonderful having people from so many countries attend. Please let your friends know if they enjoy speaking in Spanish. There is no need to register. You’ll have some free snacks and drinks at Happy Hour prices, after the first. Please buy at least one drink to support Lennon. He makes the whole of CultureClub available for our use.

It was nice to see some new members of the Society, as well as friends of the Society, at yesterday’s Get Together (26.10.11). It certainly looked as if they enjoyed the fascinating talk, given by Gonzolo, on Sevilla, as well as relished the opportunity to practise some of the Spanish learnt in their classes. Even those who couldn’t talk a lot were content to listen to the Spanish spoken. Remember we have all levels attending, including a number of very supportive native speakers of the language – Gonzalo, of course, being one of them. In addition, the social side of the evening is always enjoyed by all.

Rudy is due to give what should be another fascinating talk at our next gathering on Wednesday, November 16. His theme will be “Latinos en Nueva York”. You are all welcome to come along to enjoy the free snacks, enjoy the drinks at Happy Hour prices (after the first) and enjoy the opportunity to practise your Spanish in convivial surroundings.

A reminder that the event, starting at 7 p.m., will take place in CultureClub (www.cultureclub.com.hk), 15, Elgin Street, Soho District, Central (map attached). There is no cover charge and no need to register – just come with a desire to communicate in a beautiful language and have fun.

Live Afro-Cuban Music!

This year we are very excited to have renowned Canadian Afro-Cuban Musician David Chala performing. Born in Matanzas, Cuba, David inherited the roots of music from his Cuban fellow musicians and has over 15 years of experience in composing and teaching Latin music, and conducting professional performance in Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Canada.

Yesterday, October 5, for the first time to our knowledge, we had a Get Together on a Public Holiday. Well, it would be nice to have one every week since almost 50 people turned up and everyone was very relaxed and appeared to have a good time. What’s more, we were treated to a fascinating talk, given by Julio Cesar, on the country of Panama. Many thanks go to Julio for the clarity of his presentation and the amount of work he put into it beforehand. Suffice to say that most of us now want to visit Panama sometime in the future.

Gonzalo Abascal has kindly offered to give a talk on Sevilla at the next gathering, on October 26. Please make a note in your diary, so that we might give him our support on that occasion.

Please remember that everyone with an interest in communicating in Spanish is welcome to come to our Get Togethers in CultureClub, 15 Elgin Street, Central (www.cultureclub.com.hk - map attached).
